There are no Commie, subversive, underground, FLQ, revolutionary types in our midst. We all love Canada. We all cried with grief and sorrow, when that paragon of manhood and machismo, Patrick Chan didn't medal in Olympic Men's Figure Skating in 2010, and we all, I'm sure, cried again, this time with joy, when that same grizzled, tough, fearless, ice angel got the silver medal just a few days ago in Sochi. I know that there are whole groups of us Burnaby Lakers who are getting up at 2 AM so we can watch and cheer on our men's and women's curling teams, chanting in the early morning "LETS GO CANADA, LETS GO!" In one example of patriotism, I know that Admir was glued to the TV a couple of days ago, desperately wanting to know how Canada placed in the Skeleton event, and was the first to mail a letter of protest to the IOC, accusing the Russians of tampering with the course, when Canada didn't place in the top three. There may even be one or two of us in the BLRC who will hit the PVR record button for the Men's hockey game, so they can briefly skim through it after watching the biathlon. True Canadian patriots everyone of us.

That is why I know, in a true show of patriotism, members and friends of the BLRC, from far and wide, will line up to buy entry to the BLRC 3rd Annual Poker Tourney. Why? Because Canada benefits from gambling! How? Money circulation, my friends, the key to a thriving economy. After the Great Recession of 2008, economies world wide have remained stagnant. Investment in new business has declined, as has consumer spending. This is harmful to our Canadian economy, because our capitalist mixed market economy needs money to move around for economic growth to occur. Gambling is one of many solutions that can get money circulating in our economy again. Think of it, your $40 entry fee could be going to help put a poor Campbell Soup or Blackberry factory employee back to work, or could be helping to build a second bridge to PEI (in reality, however, it will be going to our 20th Anniversary Fund, so we can throw a kick ass party in September for the Club). So do your duty for Queen and Country, mark your calendars, and be sure to enter the BLRC Poker Tourney in March.

Details for the tourney are below:

The BLRC Poker Tournament will be held on March 29th!

The poker tournament will be at 6:30 pm on Saturday, March 29th at the Burnaby Lake Clubhouse. All proceeds from the tourney will go to the club 20th Anniversary Celebration in September 2014.

The buy-in for the tourney will be $40, with re-buys available for those of us who like to run fast and loose with our chips.
