Match Report – Burnaby Lake Rugby Club – 16 Oct 04
In a close, hotly contested match the 1st Division Burnaby Lake Men beat Abbotsford 17 to 13 this Saturday at Rotary Field
Abbotsford played the game with their usual determination and fast paced ferocity and within the first thirty minutes of the game Abbotsford had exploited some gaps in Burnaby’s defense and was up ten points to zero. However, just before the end of the first half Burnaby started to intensify its offence and scored a try. This try, scored by back Cory Kawaguchi, initiated a comeback that eventually won the game for Burnaby.
In the second half, after Burnaby Lake coach Dave Brown undoubtedly had a word with his players about defensive shortfalls, the team came out on the field and showed the grit and determination necessary for a comeback.
The game was by no means certain in its outcome till the last whistle as Abbotsford continued to play hard till the end. However, Burnaby Lake stolidly refused to lose the game and managed to play most of the second half in Abbotsford’s end.
Burnaby’s strong forwards, led by the always rambling Ryan Banks and the solid Colin McKenzie, contributed a great deal to Burnaby’s victory as did the talented running ability of backs like Graham Cross and Cory Kawaguchi.
Kawaguchi scored and converted one try and converted a drop kick for Burnaby. Graham Cross also scored a try for Burnaby.
In the 2nd Division Burnaby Lake also beat Abbotsford 48 to 10. Wyles scored three tries, Whidden two tries, Barril Perks one try, Stefano Mastromonaco one try for Burnaby. The referee awarded one penalty try for Burnaby as well. Burnaby standoff, Jamie Levchuk converted three of the tries.
In the 3rd Division it was obvious that the Burnaby Lake team was coming back from a three week break when they lost against the strong Abby thirds 7 to 50. One penalty try was awarded to Burnaby after an end zone break by Justin Denman was illegally spoiled by an Abbotsford player. The penalty try was converted by standoff, Anthony Barbossa.
In another fearsome nail-biter of a game the Burnaby Lake Premier Women beat out the Capilanos 12 to 10. Marley Harris and Julia Sugawara scored a try a piece for Burnaby. Sugawara converted one try.
