Match Report – Burnaby Lake Rugby Club – 23 Oct 04 (All teams and divisions)
By John Decaire and Dave Brown.
Last Saturday the favored Burnaby Lake 1st Division Men played the Britannia Lions at home and won, 35 to 5…
Burnaby started the match as gloomily as the overcast sky when the Brits deservedly took the lead after a minute scoring through their right wing in the corner. The score actually seemed to give the home team more of a lift than the visitors and within five minutes Ryan Neufeld had forced his way over the line to even the score. Shortly there after Burnaby had scored again even furthering the lead.
The game was halted by the referee temporarily when a fierce hail storm bombarded the field. When the weather abated ten minutes later the game began anew. Unfortunately for the Brit Lions the added rest did not invigorate them. Burnaby Lake continued to pull away in the score adding five more tries before the end of the game.
Good individual play for Burnaby was displayed by the always impressive forward Ryan Banks, who scored two tries, and the relatively new back Adam McLuskey, who managed to gather a chip and chase kick by the scrum half into his arms and surf over the line for a try. On a different note, back and designated kicker Kory Kawaguchi also had a remarkable day in that he failed to land a single conversion.
Other Burnaby Lake tries were scored by Pat Riordan, Cory Turkington and Matt Young.
This victory guarantees a spot for Burnaby in the Premier League next half.
In the lower two divisions Burnaby Lake also had successful days against the Brits with the 2nd Division winning 14 to 12 and winning in the 3rds 17 to 11.
The Brits battled hard in the second division and the game was by no means a sure thing for Burnaby. Yet in the end Burnaby did prevail with Doug Whidden scoring the only try for the team and with Jamie Levchuk keeping the team alive by converting three penalty kicks.
The thirds won with Neil Neugebauer and Aaron Curvino scoring tries. Jeff Lundgren converted both tries and completed a penalty kick.
The Burnaby Lake Premier Women tied SFU at home 17 – 17. Julia Sugawara, Karyne Steele and Suelyn Wirth scored tries. Sugawara also kicked a conversion to tie the game.
The Burnaby Lake U-19 Boys beat the Brits 17 – 13. Matt George, Sean Carmichael and Mauro Perizzolo scored tries. Brendan Fairs kicked one conversion.
On Sunday (24 Oct) the Burnaby Lake U-16 Boys lost 14-20 to Abbotsford away. Tyler Rumbley scored two tries that were both converted by Robert Manning.
