The Burnaby Lake Premier Women showed why in the past they have consistently been contenders for the Provincial Championship when they beat a vigorous UBC Thunderbirds team 22 to 9, at Wolfson Field this Saturday.
The 2003 provincial champions and 2004 runners up had a slow start in the first few minutes of the game when they gave ground before UBC and allowed them to gain the first score of the game; a penalty kick fifteen meters from goal. However, the tide quickly turned and it soon became apparent that Burnaby Lake was going to control the game, when over the course of the match Burnaby scored four tries.
Using effective scrimmaging, good individual effort and awesome, stonewalling defense, Burnaby Lake quickly sapped UBC’s confidence and in the process earned themselves a well deserved victory.
Burnaby Lake players who particularly stood out were scrumhalf Julia Sugawara and centre Karyne Steele. Sugawara’s strong passing, fleet footedness and quick thinking have become a mainstay of Burnaby’s game, while Steele’s intense tackling and hardnosed offence could not fail to intimidate the opposition.
Burnaby Lake players Dawn Williams and Jessica Dovanne scored a try a piece, and Julia Sugawara scored two. Sugawara also converted one try.
The Burnaby Lake senior men’s teams didn’t have games this weekend, as will be the case during the Thanksgiving weekend for all of Burnaby’s teams. The next set of games will be on October 16th with the Premier Women’s game at home against the Capilanos and the Men’s teams playing away against Abbottsford.
