Burnaby Lake ends the season’s first half well with three and a half wins against UBC and Lomas on the senior sides…
Despite the fact that Burnaby is still reeling from a host of player injuries, their 1st Division team still managed to handily beat the UBC Thunderbirds 32-11 at Wolfson field last weekend.
Their tough, hardnosed style of play in combination with great defensive efforts near their own goal line helped carry the day for Burnaby Lake. UBC’s momentum was sapped early in the game by Burnaby’s tough tackling, intense crashes and fleet footedness on the wing.
The usual solid performances were exhibited by Burnaby forwards, Ryan Banks, Pat Riordan, Colin McKenzie and by Ryan Neufeld, who had just recently recovered from a hand injury. However the surprise performances of the game would have to go to winger substitution Jared Petrazi, who’s positioning, speed and aggression was both exemplary and refreshing to watch on the wing, and to the scrappy scrum-half Cory Turkington, who deeked-out two men and ran in forty yards to bring in one of the two tries he scored that day.
Burnaby tries were also scored by Pat Riordan, Colin McKenzie and steady point-tallier Kory Kawaguchi. Kawaguchi also successfully kicked one penalty goal and two conversions.
In the second division, despite a UBC comeback in the second half, Burnaby managed to squeak past with a one point win, 20 –19. Burnaby try scorers were Jason Wyles, Steve Scott and Jeff Robinson. Jamie Levchuk scored one penalty goal and one conversion.
In the third division, Burnaby was outperformed by UBC in the first half but in the second half came back to score two tries and hold the opposition scoreless. This last ditch effort, however, was not enough to steal victory and UBC won the game 27 – 10. Burnaby tries scored by Ted Matsumoto and Stephan Dubreuil.
The Burnaby Lake Premier women played against the Meralomas at home and in a tight game beat them, 7-3. The tough young player Amber van der Mark clinched the win for Burnaby and scored the only try with Julia Sugawara converting it.
