Burnaby Lake Rugby Club – Match Report – 05 February 2005
By Dave Brown and John Decaire
Burnaby Lake had another round of wins this weekend, with the Premier Men and Firsts winning both games in Port Alberni and the Premier Women winning against Douglas at home.
Burnaby began the first half much as they did against UBC the previous week, in attacking style and was rewarded after just 5 minutes when scrum half Cory Turkington fed Ryan Banks on the blindside. Turkington supported his pass, took a return and scooted 30 meters to touch down; Neufeld failed with the conversion. The Pride dominated the rest of the half and should have scored after Jake Osborne found his way through the Burnaby defense. Despite defending strongly, Burnaby also found time to attack and two breaks by stand off Sean Wright and one by wing Dave Mattiazzo went unrewarded.
On the 30 minute mark an indiscretion by a Pride flanker resulted in a yellow card but Burnaby failed to capitalize. Instead it was Pride who scored right at the half after a period of sustained possession, the convert gave Pride a 7-5 lead. The second half really belonged to Burnaby in terms of position and possession despite a ten-minute period where Turkington was binned for foul play.
In this period Pride managed a solitary penalty goal to take a 10-5 lead. Burnaby managed to pull ahead when Ryan Banks picked off a poor line out throw and made inroads into the Pride backline before dishing off to Neufeld who scored at the posts. Neufeld converted his own score and added a penalty to push Burnaby ahead 15-10. It finished the same with Pride almost securing victory after charging down a clearance kick right at the whistle. Burnaby moves on to Connaught Park against Meralomas next week.
The Burnaby Lake 1st XV secured a 28-0 win against the Port Alberni Black Sheep.
The Burnaby Premier women won against Douglas at home 15–10.
