On Saturday, the U19s kicked off their season against Chilliwack in Tier 2 Leag. This group of young men were able to put on a dazzling performance albeit against an under-manned opponent. The forwards
dominated every set piece and lineout with sheer size and strength. Flanker Cole Turner had a tremendous game on offense and defense. His tenacity on defense included a tackle assist that split the brow of
team captain Trent Shelley, resulting in 5 stitches. The inside backs further complemented the forwards with tremendous downhill running displaying their power and speed. Mike Cavezza offers an unmatched
combination of size, strength, and speed. Overall, the outside backs had the greatest impact on the outcome of the game as their speed and agility with ball in hand contributed to 6 of the 9 tries on the day.
Fullback Wayne Lawson converted a tremendous 8 of 9 while using a brand new tee for the first time, cementing BLRC’s future of goal kickers. Final score: BLRC 61 – 0. Try scorers: Tyron Stojanov (3),
Adam Chang (2), Cole Turner (2), Trent Shelley, Mike Cavezza. Next up:
@ Kelowna, Saturday, Oct 1.
The U19s would like to thank all the Senior members for coming out early and supporting the future of the club. A major thank you to Moreno Stefanon for stepping up to ref the game.
Sunday, it was the U16s turn to open their season against last year’s U15 Provincial Champions, Bayside. The weather would hold up just enough throughout the game. Early on, BLRC was able to display it’s
strengths with tremendous forward play, most notably Connor Sampson. The boys were able to hold Bayside inside their own half for a good 15 minutes. The hard work eventually paid off with captain Paolo Dube
scoring and converted his own try. A few minutes after, Bayside’s renowned backs showed up and a couple passes out wide and a few missed tackles resulted in a run away try for Bayside. From this point on,
Bayside continued to hold possession for long periods of time, eventually resulting in multiple tries. At the start of the second half, Bayside kept the pressure on in defense. The relative youth and
inexperience of the backline showed against a bigger, stronger Bayside opponent. With under 15 minutes to play, the BLRC forwards reinjected themselves with hard work for another try. Conversion is no good as it
smacks the left upright. Bayside poured on for another try. Final score: Bayside 47 – 12. BLRC Try scorers: Paolo Dube (2). Next up: vs. Abbotsford, Sunday, Oct. 2.
The U16s would like to thank the families who braved the elements to support the next wave of Burnaby’s future. Special thank you to Greg Gilding and parents who helped prepare the snacks for the boys. Another huge thank you to Moreno Stefanon for his commitment to youth rugby by also reffing the U16 game.
