Elite match.
The elites were keen to continue their success, and had a little
revenge to exact after the Ravens cut their playoff run short last
spring. The boys meant business early on. A break by Joe Dolesau and
pass to the outside let loose Jeke Gotegote who scored in the corner.
The kick sailed wide and the try unconverted as the BLRC went up five
nil early.
At the twenty three minute mark, confident play by young flyhalf Nolan
Shelley saw a chip over the Raven’s defensive line which was gathered
by Dolesau who sidestepped to the corner for a try.
The Ravens then got on the board after one of the infringements by the
Lakers fell in range of the Ravens’ boot. 10-3 BLRC.
Again the foot came into play in the thirtieth minute when winger Jeke
Gotegote chipped, chased and gathered to score in the corner. Again
the conversion was left begging.
The Blue and White nearly got one more tally in as a clearing kick was
blocked by Dolesau and gathered by Gotegote who almost scored. But the
Raven’s covering tacklers knocked him out of bounds at the five metre
line. Score at the half, 15-3 Burnaby.
The second half got underway as the clouds parted and sunnier skies
broke through. Burnaby continued their pressuring play as they applied
a steady offensive push on the Ravens defence early on. At the
fiftieth minute Nate Mantle took a nice line of support and sliced
through two defenders on his way to score. Shelley with the convert
22-3 BLRC.
In the sixtieth minute Burnaby would again find the try line when
Aaron Goddard picked and drove three metres to score. Shelley would
again convert 29-3 Lakers.
The wily Ravens refused to fold and would put together a great
offensive drive. Electing to kick to the corner and going for a
lineout deep in Burnaby territory. The Ravens would win the lineout
and after several phases would come inches of the try line. Great
defence by the Lakers would turn the ball over and Burnaby would
clear. The great defensive stand by BLRC was turned into a third try
by Gotegote who outpaced his man on the outside to run in for the
final try, convert good by substitute Campbell. Final score, 36-3
Burnaby Lake.
Thank you to all the teams that came down and gave us five great
games. Thanks to all the match officials on the day. A big up to the
blue and white supporters!
