Captain Rick Flello had his boys motivated from the start + they showed excellent poise at the set piece + ruck. Particularly prominent were Carlos Valle, Andy Drummond + Quentin Flack. Good ball was provided for Jackson Tran to get his backs moving.
Fly Half Carlos A. Perreira was quick to bring his centres into the game with Scott Breadon + Tyler Rumley carrying the ball well. Tyler seems to be over his injuries + is showing signs of fulfilling the promise he showed as a standout U19 player.
Burnaby owned possession for the 1st 15 mins + credit must be given to SFU for their defence. Unable to break this down a clever chip to the corner from Perreira led to a BLRC lineout + a simple driving maul was executed well with Andy Drummond touching down for his 1st try in Blue + White.
SFU hit back just before the 1/2 with a pick + go score as a result of sustained pressure. Convert was missed 5-5 at the half + all to play for.
A gentle reminder from Rick Flello that his team should capitalise on their strength at set piece led to Burnaby starting the 1/2 once again on the front foot. Liem Jung + Morris Espiritu swapping into hook + flank.
A strong driving maul steered by Liem Jung took play to the SFU 5 metre line + with the expectation that play would go open Jackson Tran went blind + popped a nice pass to James Dorrett who dived over to keep his impressive scoring streak alive.
At this point SFU changed their tactics + took to putting up the high kick at every opportunity to test the Burnaby back field.
Full back Sean Seale was up for the challenge + showing enterprise consistently ran the ball back with strong gains.
One such run led to him being forced into touch 10 metres from the line.
SFU were able to gather the ensuing lineout but a combination of a break down in communication + quick thinking from the Burnaby Forwards led to a turnover with Sean Seale being the beneficiary + scoring a try much to the delight of his teammates. Carlos A. Perreira converted impressively from the sideline. Score 17-5.
With a little over 5 mins to play SFU threw caution to the wind + their winger scored a good try at the corner despite a valiant tackle by Garrett Grimshire.
The convert was missed + the final 5 mins were played in mid field with Burnaby’s strong defence repelling SFU. A chip by SFU over the top was gathered by Sean Seale + punted into touch to end the game at 17-10 in favour of the Blue + White.
Thanks go to SFU for the game + all the supporters for coming out.
The Burnaby coaches were delighted to get more playing time for the ever growing 3rd div squad.
Next week sees the formidable challenge of the Capilanos at Klahanie. This should be a great day of club on club rugby. All support is welcome + we look forward to seeing you there.
Happy Thanksgiving.
