Saturday October 15th 2011 The BLRC men were at Klahanie taking four
teams to face the Capilanos. For the men it wouldn’t be their day as
the boys played four solid matches but would only come away with a win
in the First division. 3rd Div wound up on the losing side of a 12-41
scoreline. The 3Bs played the opposition close but gave up two quick
scores in the dying minutes for a final score of 12 to 20 for the home
team. The first division men led by Aaron Reed came up with a solid
31-19 win.
The Tier one women hosted a confident Bayside pack and won a close
10-5 decision against the Sharks. The Tier two women won 17-12 in a
bruising affair against Ridge Meadows.
Both junior teams were in action this weekend, the U16s knotching
their first win, congratulations. While the U19 men lost an 18-12
battle with Richmond, the U19s were well led by captain Trent Shelley
who scored two tries.
In the Elite division the Blue and White were kept to just
five points by a game Capilano side. Burnaby’s lone try wasn’t enough
to seal the deal as the boys fell 10-5 to the hosts. The cloudy day
would make way for sunnier skies as the game got under way. Burnaby were looking to stay undefeated and
had prepared well all week. The game opened with a penalty to Burnaby
seconds after the kickoff, flyhalf Campbell Cuthill would kick out
of bounds for an early Burnaby lineout in Capilano territory. The
BLRC men came out firing and had an early advantage pinning the Caps
in there end with strong hits, especially by man of the match Nathan
Mantle. The early pressure led to the Capilanos giving up a penalty
near the ruck and the Blue and White took a shot at the posts.
Cuthill’s kick would sail just wide and the Caps would clear their
zone.
There was lots of Burnaby pressure early on, but knock-ons and a
swarming Capilano defence would keep the score line at zero.
Twenty minutes into the match a Burnaby lineout looked promising. The
Burnaby forwards won the ball and drove from the Capilano forty and
then executed a number of offloads towards the twenty two. It was
then the backs who would have a go as the ball found itself in the
hands of Esava Nakulanisa who would make a break for the line, only
to knock it on on the tryline.
It was then the Capilanos who would build on their good defence and
make a break into Burnaby territory, but a kick by Charlie Jones would
find its way into the hands of Cole McQueen who found a gap in the
Capilano secondary defence and pinned them back in their
territory with a clever kick.
After a series of plays Admir Cevanovic would carry the ball with two
defenders on his back but would get isolated and was penalized for not
releasing. This was the Capilanos best scoring opportunity as a quick
tap near their twenty two led to a run down the centre of the field.
The drive would end with Burnaby conceding a penalty 25 metres out,
which gave the Capilanos a chance to take a slim lead. The kick would
miss the mark.
The Capilanos had one more chance to take the lead before the half but
their attempt would again sail wide. The score, 0-0 at half.
In the second half, the Capilanos would gain momentum as an early
defensive lapse by the men in blue led to a Ryan Hamilton try. The
convert would be good by replacement kicker Yanagiya.
As the half continued more physical play took place. Referee Sherrie
Trumble would hand out a yellow card to Burnaby, and then one more to
each team five minutes later. With the field opened up, the Capilanos
saw the oppourtunity to play run and gun rugby. But a quick back line
move by the North Shore team would yield points for Burnaby as
Campbell Cuthill picked off a long pass and took it the other way for
a try.
The Burnaby cheers were cut short however when the tying convert was
blocked by the Capilanos.
The second half saw much of the same physicality with the game being
played between the twenty twos. The only other score was a penalty
struck true by Yanagiya around the 70 minute mark.
Burnaby would apply pressure in the final minutes but the boys were
plagued by knock ons and turned away by a determined Capilano defence.

A nice run and offload by young Fuku Vikilani coming on at wing put
Jeke Gotegote away, but he would slip on the muddy corner just short
of the line. The score would finish in favour of the Capilanos, 10-5.
Thanks to the Capilanos for giving us four solid games. Thank you to
the match officials and to the many Burnaby supporters who came out.
