Saturday October 1, 2011 – On what was a cloudy day down at the lake, the BLRC once again was fortunate to host a full slate of games. UBC provided four solid mens teams and SFU’s Tier 1 coming down from the hill to play the women. The Women would win their game with a convincing 41-0 victory over SFU. The Men would split their games. UBC would take the thirds’ battles downing the 3As 19-0, and winning 17-10 against Burnaby’s 3Bs. The firsts put in a solid effort winning 61-0 versus the Braves. The Elite faced a game UBC ‘Birds squad and came away with a 19-3 win.
Tier 1 women. 41-zip over SFU. Great games by Deb Capps, Julia Sugawara and the young guns.
3As vs UBC Totems – 19-0 to UBC. Great games by BLRCs Scott Breadon – nice crashing runs. John Decaire too with a good strong game.
3Bs. Lost 17-10 to UBCs 3Bs. New player Sean the “Swirish” had a nice 80 metre run for a try and the pack had a neat collective forwards try. Good games by Matt Campbell, Denis Juice Marsden, Jackson Tran. Cheers to Joey Lee in at coach.
First Div with a 61-0 win. Tries by L. Heart, M. Govorchin, B. McHugh, F. Vikilani, C. Cuthill (Jug Avoidance), D. Schinbein (Jug Avoidance), A.R. Fisher, B. Bonnel and A. Bird, C. McQueen with two converts. The boys had a nice game.
19-3 Elite men over the Thunderbirds. Early mistakes cost the Lakers. Hands in at the breakdown let UBC’s Hamstra notch 3 points. Putting UBC up 3-0 only minutes into the match. This was a close one from the get go, tight defensive efforts, coupled with long territorial kicks by both teams left points off the score sheet.
The game and the score would remain this way until about twenty minutes into the half when a successful driving maul by the Burnaby Lake forwards led to a pair of neat line breaks and off loads which saw Doug Breadon finish off the drive with an nice dive over for the five points. The try was unconverted, the score 5-3 going into the break.
The second half was much of the same style of play. The Lakers would apply pressure but the ‘Birds would not give up a try. The Burnaby pack was set on establishing a forward oriented game electing to go for the line out on easily kickable penalites. On this day the Blue and White elected to go for a line out and maul instead of chipping over for points. Though they were turn away on their first attempt, their second go at a corner line out and maul led to Aaron Goddard scoring a try. The kick converted. The score 12-3 for the BLRC.
UBC would come close to scoring on a number of occasions, a line break by UBC centre Taylor Dalziel pinned Burnaby in their 22. UBC then started to grind phase after phase of pick and go rugby. But the boys held firm and were able to turn the ball over and clear the zone. Burnaby would again add a tally in the dying minutes with Andrew Lackner going over for the final try. The conversion by Cuthill sailed between the posts and the game would end 19-3.
Thanks to UBC’s four teams – Birds, Braves, Totems and Teepees?, and SFU Women for coming down and giving us a day of solid competition.
Thanks to the match officials, and to the supporters who came down to watch the games.
