Saturday November 5, 2011. Clear skies and wide open rugby as the BLRC
Men hosted three teams at the lake.
The 3As won their game versus United in what was a scrappy affair.
Final score 36-5 Burnaby Lake. Good games by Ricky Bobby, young Myles
Murphy, Barry Bonell and Rory Love on the wing.
The 3Bs also won their exhibition versus Richmond with a 37-5 win.
Good games were had by Morris, Trent and the veteran Joe Lee.
In the Elite Division Burnaby outgunned Velox with a 44 to 6 victory.
The boys had a hard week of training in anticipation of the first game
of the round robin qualifications. The BLRC elites wanted to come out
fast and take it to Velox early on, but credit to Velox as the sea
legs didn’t seem to affect the Islanders. The Valhallians came on
strong and went up 3 points early on.
Burnaby weathered the initial storm and settled down in attack. In
their next offensive drive the BLRC were able to draw a penalty and
tie the game up with a Jeff Ryan penalty kick from about thirty metres
out.
After Burnaby managed to turn back a strong Velox drive and move the
ball upfield. Burnaby were then able to pressurize the Velox back
three. An errant kick by the Velox wing allowed Burnaby to set up
shop deep in Velox territory. A couple of phases later it was Scott
MacKay who scored his one and only try in the corner to bring the home
side up five, and Ryan who made the convert to lift the BLRC up 10-3.
Burnaby were now starting to gain momentum. In the thirtieth minute a
Velox knock on gave Burnaby possession near the Velox twenty two metre
line. Off the scrum the backs ran the ball in the centres via Adam
‘rugged good looks’ Martin who was hit by two Velox defenders, both of
whom knocked Adam one way and then the other – which enabled him to
stay upright. He found open space and dove in under the posts for his
first try of the game. Ryan would convert, 17-3 Burnaby. The BLRC
would add another three points before the end of the half as Jeff Ryan
saw an opportunity for a drop goal in front of the posts and kicked
the ball through for three points.
The half would end 20-3 for the BLRC.
At the start of the second half Velox again came out with a flurry and
caused Burnaby to commit a penalty. Velox would add three points to
their total to make the game 20-6.
It was then Burnaby’s turn, as the forwards showed some wonderful
hands via Mike Gough to Admir Cejvanovic who found a gap and ran deep
into the Velox half before being tackled by a cover defender. Off the
quick ball the boys pushed the ball to the outside to Adam ‘Vintage’
Martin who scored his second in the corner. Ryan with the convert.
27-6 Burnaby. Six minutes later the BLRC would be given advantage for
a Velox infringement and Ryan would add another drop goal as he found
himself in front of the posts. 30-6 Burnaby.
Five minutes later Burnaby would again find the corner via good play
by the forwards. Dougie “Fresh” would find Mike Gough who offloaded to
Jeke Gotegote who then broke through for a try near the posts, Ryan
would convert and the score was 37-6 Burnaby.
Burnaby would add a final try when a kick by fullback Cole McQueen was
returned by the Velox runner straight into replacement prop Micha
Govorchin who stripped the ball off the runner and offloaded down the
line. The ball again found Gotegote on the wing who sprinted past the
last defenders and scored in the corner. Ryan would add the two
points. The game would end 44-6 Burnaby Lake.
For Burnaby the all important win. Thanks to Velox, United and
Richmond who came and gave us three solid matches. Thanks to the
match officials on the day and to the Blue and White fans who came and
supported us on the day. The elite men play the Rowers at the Oval
next week in the next leg of the premier qualifying matches.
