BLRC Premier Women vs. Meralomas
Nov 5/11
Saturday at Connaught Park saw the BLRC Premier Women close out the Tier 1 Fall league regular season remaining undefeated with a 27-0 win over the Meraloma Premier Women. The win was workman like and comprehensive if not inspiring and brilliant. The ‘Lomas looked well drilled and well organized but out-gunned in most phases of the game. Burnaby relied on a stifling defense to buy them both time and second chances until their somewhat erratic attack shifted from inept to sublime during the full 80 minutes. Newly minted hooker, Nancy Radman scored first, taking advantage of a break by Alicia Noger and a magic support line by Kim Donaldson to power over after 10 minutes of play. Later in the first half Julia Sugawara shifted the attack to the blind-side off some slow second phase possession to make one of her patented walk-abouts through the opposition defensive backline. Score at the half was 10-0 Burnaby. Although the Meralomas had applied some pressure to the Burnaby try-line in the first half such pressure was rare in the second half as Burnaby dominated the territorial battle. Devon Luca from her fullback position scored another try on the blindside and Mel Miyazaki scored on a rare outside move before Laura Harmse finished the deal when ‘Lomas defenders scattered as she turned the corner on a backrow move. Burnaby now awaits a series of tie-breaker decisions before knowing who their opponent will be for the semi-final on Nov 19th at Burnaby Lake.
Notes and Stuff
Although Burnaby Lake played reserveless for most of the game the Burnaby side-line looked like a who’s who of BC Women’s rugby with at least 8 injured, retired and future players (you know who you are) in attendance. Rumour was the Emma Hadfield was in virtual attendance through a video link.
The winner of the quiz question 2 weeks ago regarding brother-sister combinations on the club was answered quickly and correctly by Mike Devlin who named Pam and Aaron Goddard, Anthony and Devon Luca and Alya and Misha Govorchin as currently playing and Anton and Iona Schamberger and Crystal and Spencer Steele and previously having played for the Blue and White.
