This past weekend the women continued their winning ways against longtime rival SFU …
Over the last few seasons some of the Burnaby Lake Women’s best rugby has been played against Simon Fraser University. With the exception of a season opening 70 point drubbing at the hands of the Clan two years ago, all the games have been close, well played affairs. This last Saturday, however, the Ladies of the Lake found themselves confronted with an eager but very inexperienced SFU contingent. Initially Burnaby appeared confused and uncertain about the “new-look” opponent. Although attacking well with ball in hand Burnaby struggled on defense, taking numerous, sloppy off-side penalties and allowing SFU prolonged periods of possession. Sabrina Neufeld running close support off Kary Steele scored the first try, followed by Anna Schnell on an individual break and Emma Hadfield off a back row movement in close. An all too common Burnaby defensive lapse allowed SFU to score a long try to leave the score at 17-5 at the half.
By the second half the Burnaby team sorted out their defensive patterns and this combined with a huge domination of the set scrums allowed Burnaby to control the game. The half was played entirely in the SFU half and Burnaby tries were scored by Christie Dillabough, Jody Dobush, Iona Schamberger and Anna Schnell with her second of the game. Anna added three converts to the parade to leave the final score 41-5.
The Burnaby backline continues to look dangerous on most every possession and the front row of Shannon Fedewa, Shannon Lowe and Iona Schamberger appears to be developing into a dominant force.
The Burnaby Lake Premier Women kick-off BLOBs day against pre-season league favourite Capilano’s at 11:30 at the lake. Burnaby is currently tied for first place with Caps in the Premier league standings.
