Read on for the results from the weekend…
Although the forecast was for rain it was great weather for fall rugby, though the ball was a little slippery in the early stages of the thirds game. The morning started with the third division facing the Meralomas. The Burnaby side looked to dominate for the first half but the Meralomas would have none of that and kept the game tight all the way through. Late in the game Burnaby was up 15-10 when a costly mistake was made by center Mark Lavery. A stripped ball in the Burnaby end zone was touched down by the Lomas to tie up the game. 15-15 with little time left. Burnaby didn’t let that phase them and pushed forward and after a strong drive from all Ryan Banks went over for a try to put the home side up. The Lomas kept coming strong and pressure on a kick deep in the Burnaby end led to a turnover with a Loma player picking the ball up on unsteady feet and diving over the line only to be held up by some desperate Burnaby hands. The final whistle blew on the ensuing stoppage of play and the home team had saved their victory.
Close games were the theme of the day and the second division game versus the Lomas was close most of the way through. Late in the second half the visiting pack began to take charge and made it very difficult for Burnaby to retain any ball. A flurry of scoring from the visitors made it clear that although it was close for much of the game that the Lomas were in control.
In first division action things were again close. The Meralomas took an early lead and by the half were ahead 13-3. Things didn’t improve much for Burnaby in the second half as they were down 23-13 before they stared their comeback push. They ran out of time though and had to settle for a bonus point in the 23-20 loss. It could have been a different result but a very lucky bounce gave the Lomas an easy try for the win; but such is the nature of the game.
The closest game of the day had to come from the women. UBC was at Burnaby Lake to play the 1st place home side, and they certainly came prepared. After 80 minutes of play the result was a 0-0 tie. The visitor celebrated like it was a victory, which is a testament to how highly regarded the women’s team is. And although the women felt it as a defeat, they are technically undefeated and their stellar defensive record remains in tact.
After the day of game everyone took a breather and went home to prepare their Halloween costumes and then came back to the clubhouse for a the club’s annual Halloween Bash. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the club.
