Burnaby Lake vs. UBC
Oct 29/05
It was a good news / bad news weekend for the Burnaby Lake Premier women. The good news was that, again for the fourth game this season they didn’t allow a point against, more good news was that for the sixth game this season they didn’t lose. The bad news was that they didn’t score a point and more bad news was that they didn’t record a win against the winless UBC Thunderbirds. Faced with a determined, motivated Thunderbird defense Burnaby failed to find the key to the end zone gates for the first time this season. Injuries to the Canadian 9-10 combination of Julia Sugawara and Anna Schnell forced many positional changes as the roster moves rippled through the line-up. Initially Burnaby seemed to deal with the adjustments in stride, but as the game wore on and the UBC defense bent but didn’t break, the Burnaby players grew frustrated and began to press individually with predictable negative results. Both Shannon Lowe and Michelle Paquet turned in solid performances at the scrum half position and Sabrina Neufeld spun from outside centre to fullback in practice only to play flyhalf on game day. The unflappable D’Alice Marsh calmly went from reserve backrow to starting lock and finished the game as a loosehead prop in an example of selfless effort.
The tie leaves Burnaby Lake one point up on Capilano’s in the Premier division. Burnaby plays newly merged Pocomo-Douglas superteam at 11:30 at Burnaby Lake next Saturday.
