With all but one scheduled games played Burnaby had a busy Saturday and came away with some good results…
The two third division teams travelled in opposite directions and came home with opposite results. The 3B’s went east to Langley for their first game of the season. The well experienced squad worked hard and came home successful with a 22-10 win. The scoring was all done in the backs in this one with tries scored by Justin Denman, Jay Cain, Jeff Lorz, and Gary Reid; a single conversion was hit by Denman as well.
Off to the west was the 3A squad to face Nanaimo on the Island. Unfortunately they did not come home with similar success. Anthony Barbossa was able to get a penalty kick in for the only score in the 3-49 loss.
Back in Burnaby the field conditions were an issue and so the first division game was postponed in order to ensure that both Premier teams (Men and Women) were able to get their games in. The women faced United in thee first game after the Christmas break and enjoyed a 31-5 win. Scoring came in the form of five tries, one each from Shannon Lowe, Kary Steele, Emma Hadfield, Sabrina Neufeld, and Dawn Williams while Anna Schnell converted 3 of them. Coming off a close win last week the Burnaby Lake Premier Men’s team was looking to improve their performance. UVIC was coming off a strong win against the Castaway Wanderers and would be tough competition for the BLRC. It looked to be a long day as the visitors scored off the opening kickoff. Burnaby quickly regrouped and applied the pressure. This led to an excellent try by Barry Ebl. The home side continued to put the gears to the young UVIC squad, especially in the forwards where the strength of the home pack was unmatched and resulted in four tries scored in mauls from lineouts. These were all scored by Pat Riordan was enjoyed and excellent game. Craig Stewart was excellent with the boot converting all five tries from all over the field and hiting a single penalty as well. Craig’s kicking was spot on around the pitch as well put the UVIC back three through the paces. It was a well placed cross kick that led to the final Burnaby try which was touched down by Cam Crosse. The final score was Burnaby 43, UVIC 13.
