Burnaby Lake Women 2nds vs. United 2nds
On a hot day at Hume Park, Burnaby Lake and United once again renewed acquaintances. Faced with injuries, retirements, holidays and call ups to the premier team, Burnaby didn’t have the numbers this week so a shorter game was arranged. Rugby is better than no rugby. Burnaby faced a tough challenge with United proving to be the older, faster, deeper and more experienced squad. Despite the lopsided score line, Burnaby put in a good performance. Burnaby’s first up tackles were there, but an inability to handle United’s bigger faster forwards, when they were running from depth proved to be their undoing.
Over the course of two twenty minute periods, Burnaby was able to score two good tries for 12 points.
The first try was created with some good recycling work by Burnaby’s young pack Captain and scrum half Ahn Tran was presented with fast ball inside the United 22, and with support on the outside, was able to convert a 2 on 1, dummying the United defender and stepping inside to score.
Showcasing their never give up attitude the 2nds created a second try off of a set piece. Good possession led to inside centre Devon Luca setting up outside centre Angel Santos for a score on a nice switch. Angel accelerated through the gap to dot the ball down beneath the posts.
After 40 minutes the score was 30 – 12 for United. The Burnaby players then agreed to play an additional 10 minutes to give the United players who hadn’t been on a run. Final score 51 – 12 for United.
Congrats to United for a well won victory, and a well done to a very young Burnaby team that never gave up!
