Saturday April 7th, 2012 – Burnaby’s Premier and First Division Men travelled into the Valley to do battle with Abbotsford. Having no third division games this week both teams came with fresh substitutions that provided plenty of firepower off the bench. The boys came away with two victories, going 41-13 in the firsts and 54-8 in the premier divisions.
The first division set the pace early on with scintillating runs by man of the match winger Matt “red boots” Jarvis. The front row was again dominant, charged with age and treachery, Dowhy, Petrovitch and Decaire had a combined one hundred and two years of scrumming wisdom. The forwards put in a workman like effort with ex volleyball player Craig McLaughlin leading the charge. Amongst the try scorers in addition to Matt Jarvis were Rainman,Nolan Shelley,Danny Schinbein, Angoose “VP” Fisher.
The victory was a great team effort as the team re-inforced coach Dave Murphy’s wishes for an up tempo performance. Graduated BLRC Jnr Mike Cavezza was a notable addition into the 2nd half & showed that he can most definitely play at this level.
In the premier match the boys were extra motivated this week as a win and bonus point were crucial to stay in the playoff race. The Blue and White got going early led by Big Nate who crashed in for a try. Geoff Ryan would convert to make it 7 to 0 for the BLRC. Abby would get on the board as a penalty conceded by Burnaby let Abby’s Chris Pack tee one off from the thirty for three points. 7-3 Burnaby. Burnaby were playing quick attacking rugby on the day and an offside off the breakdown by Abby yielded three points to Burnaby as Ryan would strike another through the uprights. 10-3 BLRC fifteen minutes into the game.
It was then Rory McDonnell’s turn as he shucked and jived and found a seam in Abby’s backline to score. Geoff Ryan would add another two to make it 17-3 Burnaby. Abby would get a try through a strong rolling maul by the forwards. The kick from the corner would sail wide 17-8 to the visitors. The BLRC would add another three points to make it twenty to eight at half time.
In the second half Burnaby would add more points to seal the bonus point.Tries were scored by Mantle, Dolesau, Laudisio, Bonnel and Villares. They would also tighten up their defence as they limited the centre pairing of Pack and Henderson to minimal ball and swarming defence. Great games were had by Captain Gough, Gotegote, and Goddard.
Thanks to Abbotsford for the two well played matches, and as always for great hosting. A big thanks to Kyle Ferguson and the guest referees from Invercargill, NZ. Thanks to the many members of the BLRC nation that spent their sunny Easter Saturday cheering on the teams & off course to Louisa for the amazing Roti.
The boys achieved their goals for the week, and look forward to a full slate of home games vs the Lomas next Saturday when the Palmer Cup will be up for grabs. The day starts at 10.00 am with our U14’s playing Chuckanut & our 2nd div ladies playing the Lomas 2nd div.
