Burnaby Lake send Old Boys home to lick their wounds…
In the first division a very confident and impetuous Burnaby Lake side defeated the usually fierce UBC Old Boys at home on Saturday, 25 to 8. Burnaby used hardnosed offence, exhibiting strong scrummaging, unmatched rucking, good mauling skills and yard gaining centre crashes. On defense, Burnaby rallied at almost all the right times making it very difficult for UBC to gain any ground. The result was that a somewhat surprised UBC side could only gain one try and convert one penalty kick.
Star performances were exhibited by center Graham Cross, whose aggressive crashes and crazy legged style of play managed to continually gain yards, and by hook Patrick Riordan, whose hard hitting tackling and ability to make good passes while going into contact gave Burnaby great momentum.
Jason Wylses, Graham Cross and Team Canada veteran Colin McKenzie scored the tries for Burnaby Lake. Cory Kawaguchi kicked two conversions, a penalty goal and a drop goal.
In the second division, Burnaby Lake also won over the UBC Old Boys 30 – 16. Doug Whidden, Andrew Lackner, Anthony Luca, Ian Sinclair and Dan Roberts scored Burnaby’s tries. Jamie Levchuk successfully kicked one penalty goal and one conversion.
Burnaby Lake’s Premier Women in a hard fought, close match, lost to Nanaimo 19-28 at home. Jessica Dovanne scored one try and Karyne Steele scored two tries. Julia Sugawara converted two of the tries.
Burnaby Lake’s U-19 Men lost 7 – 43 to UBC. The only Burnaby try was scored by Brandon McArthur and was converted by Shane McCoy.
