Burnaby Lake Rugby Club – Match Report – 29 Jan 05
By Dave Brown and John Decaire
Burnaby Lake managed to pull off a club wide sweep last weekend by winning all their senior games in all divisions. The sweep was crowned by a resounding victory at home on the part of the Burnaby Lake Premier squad against UBC in their first game of the premier season, 29 – 10.
The Burnaby Lake Premier team started their game intensely, both on offence and defense, and was rewarded by spending most of the first half in UBC territory. Early breaks by Tom Glassen went unrewarded and Burnaby should have taken the lead on the 10 minute mark when the full back mishandled a pass with the line at his mercy. However, the pack dominated the ensuing scrum and turned possession back to the home team pack who shunted flanker Ryan Neufeld over for a score. Neufeld, taking over the kicking duties from the injured Kory Kawaguchi, missed the conversion and then a penalty attempt. The Burnaby pack continued to dominate and a forward drive after a period of pressure saw Jeff Robinson touch down and Neufeld convert for a 12-0 lead.
The try also resulted in a UBC yellow card sending a player to the bin. In the remaining minutes of the half Burnaby scored 2 more tries. The first, a sweeping effort from left to right covering 80 meters saw Matt Young score and Neufeld convert. Then new player, Chris Landry, picked off an errant UBC pass and sauntered 60 meters to score on his debut, and again Neufeld converted.
Half time came with Burnaby up by 26-0. The bonus point secured, the four try curse kicked in with Burnaby playing aimlessly with the ball in the second half, but defending well under more UBC pressure. UBC finally scored at the 30 minute mark with a surge at a ruck on the goal line. Burnaby responded with 3 points from the boot of Ryan Neufeld before UBC finished off the game with a score deep in injury time.
The Burnaby Lake 1sts beat UBC 17-11 at Burnaby Lake. Two Burnaby tries scored by Mark Wilkenson and David McCallum scored one try. James Read kicked one conversion for Burnaby.
Burnaby Lake 3As beat Rowers 18-13 at Burnaby Lake. Michael Jordan scored two tries and Nick Baird scored one try for Burnaby. Burnaby back, Jared Piatrasz kicked one penalty goal.
The Burnaby Lake Women beat Pocomo 22-15 in an exhibition game at Hume Park. Mandy Lewis, Karyne Steele, Emma Hadfield and Julia Sugawara scored one try each for Burnaby. Sugawara also kicked one conversion.
The Brit-Lions defaulted and the Burnaby 3Bs were awarded a win.
