Burnaby Lake played Bayside at home this weekend and won three of the four games played. The Burnaby 3Bs, 1st Div and Under 14s were all victorious against Bayside. Yet these victories were overshadowed by the performance of Burnaby’s Premier team against Bayside.
The Burnaby Lake Premier side hosted Bayside with high expectations following its great start to this half of the season. It became apparent early on in the game, however, that Burnaby would have to work hard to overcome their tenacious opponents. Bayside opened the scoring through centre Chris pack after just 2 minutes when he converted a penalty. The next 15 minutes was played in the middle of the field with neither team asserting itself until a break by Burnaby full back Thomas Glasen found Ryan Neufeld in support. Neufeld charged some 30 meters to score but failed to convert, his attempt hitting a post. At the 25-minute mark Bayside found themselves a man down. With the extra man on the field, Burnaby failed to make its mark. First, wing Matt Young put his side under undue pressure by failing to make touch on two consecutive penalty kicks. Bayside made the most of these lapses by forcing Burnaby to concede a penalty which Pack converted to give his team a 6-5 lead. Burnaby then squandered a try scoring opportunity when Pat Riordan’s telling break to the Bayside line went unconverted. Burnaby then found themselves a man short as Kevin Klimczak was sent to the end zone. Bayside responded immediately by recycling the ball before moving it wide to the right to an unmarked LaBounty who scored close enough to the posts to give Pack an easy conversion and Bayside a 13-5 half time lead.
Burnaby started the second half by pressuring the visitors in their own 22 and should have closed the gap when Ryan Banks penetrated the defense. His 30-meter drive came to nothing as his pass was knocked on close to the Bayside line. The home team finally closed the gap to 10-13 when Pat Riordan drove over from the side of a maul. With 20 minutes to go, a thrilling finish appeared to be on the horizon. Instead, Bayside pulled away and finished the game off in the next 5 minutes. First Pack pushed them further ahead with a penalty, 16-10. Then Andrew Hoffman, who had been held in check for most of the afternoon, found a gap and broke free to score under the posts, giving Pack another easy conversion, 23-10. Hoffman and Pack repeated their scoring acts again with less than 5 minutes remaining, 30-10. And right on the whistle, Bayside added the bonus try and completed its victory. The Burnaby Lake Premiers must now regroup and face a strong Velox side this coming weekend.
Burnaby Lake Firsts beat Bayside 25-12. The Burnaby Lake firsts gave a thrilling performance with forwards Gareth Morey-Jones and Aaron Goddard providing hard-hitting tackles all game. Scrum half Rainiel de Guzman also played well in his role as scrum half, seeing gaps and exploiting them at will. Mike Wong, de Guzman and David McCallum scored one try each for Burnaby. New Burnaby player James Read scored one try and kicked a conversion and a penalty goal.
In what was a close thrilling match between two strong 3rd Div sides, Burnaby Lake 3B’s beat Bayside 19-17. Star performances were given by tough veteran Jason Cain and crazy legged Chris Mclaren. Burnaby back Ronan Deane converted his own try. Jason Cain scored two tries and Paul D’Agnolo kicked one conversion for Burnaby.
Burnaby Lake U-14 (Tier 1) beat Chuckanutt 60-10 away. David Dragoni and Matthew Davey scored one try each. Sam McDonald and Nathan Wong both scored a pair of tries. Travis Baker scored three tries and kicked five conversions.
Burnaby Lake U-14 (Tier 2) beat Bayside at home 35-10.
Burnaby Lake U-16s lost to Richmond at home 12-24.
