BLRC Premier Women vs. Bayside
Feb 4/12
Burnaby Lake played Bayside twice in the Fall stanza of the Elite women’s league. The games were decided by a total of 13 points, a 7 point and a 6 point margin both in Burnaby’s favour. Heading into the second week of the Spring season most were expecting a close match, with Bayside continuing to close the gap on the defending champs. Projections, expectations and linear regressions fell by the wayside as Burnaby Lake exploded for a 9 try, shutout performance against the South Surrey maidens. The front row was all business in their dismantling of the opposing pack while the backs under the guidance of Maria Gallo at fly-half made good use of an abundance of possession… Erin Jang was the first to touch down less than 10 minutes into the game. This was quickly followed up by Lauren Tagg scoring off a quick pass from Corrine Jacobsen. A deft kick from Gallo found Deb Capps in full stride on the way to the Bayside goal line. With Bayside now reeling from the Burnaby attack and unable to advance what little ball they won, the second half was more one way traffic. Laura Harmse was rewarded for tireless work with a trip to the Bayside end zone followed by Deb Capps with her second of the game. Tired of being only a set up man, Gallo jinked, goose stepped and finally boshed her way across the try line. Erin Jang following a Becky Querido counter attack on a failed Bayside clearing kick added to her total and Alya Govorchin entered the game and promptly lit up the field with a 40 metre try. The final tally was by Captain Katie Larson. The Burnaby Lake women will try and maintain this torrid pace against Capilano at Burnaby Lake next week.
Trivia – As this is Valentine’s Day week and in honour of the engagement of Mike Devlin and Krystal Steele your task is to name husband and wife combinations that have played for Burnaby Lake. The contestant who names the most will win a trip down Memory Lane with Roko Kapaiwai. Send you answers to waltbrandl@telus.net
Last weeks answer – The two Premier starts that have only the BLRC on their rugby résumé are Erin Jang and Genevieve Gratton. The first non member of the BLRC women’s team to answer correctly was Mike Devlin. Oh. Mike! The stories I will tell you.
