Rugby is a very exciting, free flowing and often spectacular game, but it is quite technical and requires the mastering of many different individual and team skills. The Burnaby Lake Rugby Club’s youth program introduces the game to players gradually, teaching the skills and tactical concepts of Rugby, in a safe and fun manner. This introduction follows Rugby Canada’s Long-Term Rugby Development model. Rugby Canada’s LTRD model consists of an 8-stage player development pathway beginning with an introduction to physical activity and sport through to elite participation in rugby. The model is structured around chronological age; however, its principles and specific content are based on a player’s developmental age. In line with the LRTD model, youth rugby starts with mini rugby and progresses to age grade rugby.
Mini’s Rugby
With introduction to rugby being the key in this age group from 5-year-old to 13-year-old., the focus resides on individual development and team integration. The younger ages focus on fun games that teaches movement and holding onto a ball and avoiding contact. The older age group could see more team play with focuses such as passing backwards and running forwards and introduction into tackling.
The season runs from September to May with winter break in December and January.
$200 covers registration for the entire year and includes shorts and socks to keep and a loaned jersey to be returned at the end of the season.
Junior’s Rugby
Development of the finer skills is the focus for this age group from 14-year-old to 19-year-old. This includes passing, kicking, lineout plays, scrummaging, forward and back plays, tackling, and rucking. Currently the Burnaby Lake Rugby Club offers U19 boys’ and girls’ teams that compete in the summer primarily with the U19 boys’ team recently travelling to Scotland and England to play rugby.
We hope to introduce teams for U14 and U17 age grades in the near future.
